No two rooms the same.
Where the coaching inn once stabled its horses, there are now three rooms with real character. Each is decorated in its own style, with deep colours, statement walls, tartan and art you'll want to look at twice.
What they share is the comfort: a king-size bed, heated floors and a private en-suite with a walk-in waterfall shower behind smoked glass.
Small, local and independent.
Stable Yard Rooms is independent and locally run, not part of a chain. We chose every wallpaper, print and cushion ourselves, and when you message us, it's us who reply.
Arrival is easy: on the day you arrive we send you your own check-in details by WhatsApp, so you can come and go as you please. We're never more than a message away if you need anything, from a dinner booking at the Angel to the best walk from the door. And when you book, we'll send you our own guide to where we like to eat.
Centuries of travellers on the same road.
The White Swan is a Grade II listed coaching inn on Gilling West's High Street, standing since at least the mid-1700s. For generations it served travellers on the roads through Richmondshire, and its stable block across the yard housed their horses. Those stables are now our three rooms.
The village is far older. In the Domesday Book of 1086, Gilling was the chief manor of the lands that became Richmondshire. Scots Dike, an ancient earthwork, runs past the village, and the great Iron Age stronghold of the Brigantes at Stanwick is a few miles north. Just to the east runs Dere Street, the Roman road north through Piercebridge to Hadrian's Wall.
On the edge of the Dales, close to the A1.
Gilling West is a quiet village at the foot of Swaledale, just north of Richmond. The Yorkshire Dales are ten minutes away, the A1 and A66 meet at Scotch Corner two minutes away, and the Angel Inn is a short walk up the High Street for dinner.
